A Journey from City Kids to Sustainable Farmers

In the midst of the global pandemic, when uncertainties gripped the world, we found ourselves on an unexpected journey—a journey that would lead us from the hustle and bustle of suburban living to the serene mountains of Northeastern Pennsylvania. What began as a dream, sparked by a desire for space and sustainability – the eventual retirement plan – transformed into sudden reality.

Greetings! We’re Mike and Meghan, a couple of city folk who traded a suburban setting for the breathtaking beauty of mountain vistas. The pandemic, with all its disruptions, became our catalyst for change. Like many, we re-evaluated ourselves, our family dynamic, and most importantly, our priorities. We sought a life more in tune with nature, fostering sustainability and self-sufficiency.

We envisioned a life where we could nurture the land, raise our family, and contribute to a regenerative way of farming – eventually being able to give back to our community once we grew in size and experience. What started as a retirement dream soon evolved into a reality that exceeded our expectations.

Starting the Farm

Arriving in Northeastern Pennsylvania with our four children in tow, we embarked on a journey of learning and transformation. The mountains became our classrooms, and the soil beneath our feet held the promise of a sustainable future. The transition to rural PA was not without its challenges, but our family embraced each hurdle as an opportunity to grow, both personally and professionally.

In less than a year of settling into our forever home, our family achieved remarkable milestones.

Within one month of unpacking boxes and staging furniture (June 2022), we started our first flock of meat chickens – grown from day old chicks to hearty, healthy meat at finishing. With this milestone under our belt, we decided to go bigger, better, more efficient, and quickly, expanded.

The following summer, (2023) our garden went from an experiment of two, 10-foot plots to 60×40 feet with a greenhouse. We successfully raised over 300 meat birds this time, tended to a flock of 16 hens, and welcomed two pigs onto our growing farmstead. Our children, each playing an active role in the daily operations, embraced the principles of regenerative farming with enthusiasm and dedication.

For our family, regenerative farming isn’t just a livelihood; it’s a way of life. The practices we employ go beyond sustainability; we actively work to restore and rejuvenate the land we call home. Crop rotation, re-introducing native plants and trees, rotational grazing, and no-till gardening are not just buzzwords but integral components of our farming ethos.

Supporting Local

Reflecting on this journey, we’d like to emphasize the importance of community support for new, small farms. Local residents, friends, and the surrounding communities are crucial components to success within a declining industry. The community’s encouragement and support play a pivotal role in our continued success.

What the Future Holds

2024 draws big and exciting changes for the farm. Our goals include expanding the vegetable garden and fencing, adding a flower field, corn and pumpkin patch, permaculture orchard, a farmstand, and additional animals. Here, we’re not just cultivating crops; we’re sowing seeds of sustainability and resilience. This story is about reconnecting with nature, fostering a sense of community, and inspiring a new generation to embrace important regenerative practices.

Our journey illustrates the transformative power of sustainable living. What began as a retirement dream turned into a vibrant reality, proving that with determination, a little education, a lot of research, and community support, anyone can embark on a path toward regenerative agriculture. We hope that our story can serve as a beacon for others seeking a meaningful connection to the land and a sustainable, purposeful way of life.
